JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities is warning the public of a scam targeted at an area business as well as local customers.
BPU officials say a business received a call from someone claiming to be a BPU representative. The caller said the business was past-due on its utility bill and would be shut off unless payment was made.
The scammer reportedly told the business to call an 800 number, and when dialed, was transferred to another caller to arrange a payment.
The BPU said Wednesday it does not call customers and ask for payment via an 800 number. A spokesman said if a similar incident occurs customers should hang up.
