Jamestown police chief Harry Snellings (standing) goes over the details of a plan to purchase body-worn cameras with the Jamestown City Council on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015.

JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown Police Department will likely have body-worn cameras for all of its officers by the end of this year.

The Jamestown City Council is expected to move forward with entering into a contract with Linstar, Inc. to provide the police department with the equipment and training needed to incorporate body worn cameras into the department.

Jamestown Public Safety Director and Police Chief Harry Snellings says the total cost for the cameras and related storage equipment and software would be just under $51,000. He said he is also currently talking with the police union to finalize a policy that would address the procedure and protocol for the cameras.

The cost of the cameras would be covered by money left over from a communications grant the city recently received.

In June, Snellings first brought the issue of body-worn cameras to the city council during a presentation, explaining how the cameras could be useful, along with the procedure for recording and storing the video.
