Body of Missing Boater Found Wednesday Morning in Chautauqua Lake

June 24, 2015 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

Chautauqua County SheriffLAKEWOOD – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that the body of a missing boater from Lakewood who was last seen Sunday has been recovered.

Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace said in a media release that the body of 52 year-old Phillip Gibbs was recovered Wednesday morning at about 6 a.m. in the waters of Chautauqua Lake in the town of Busti.

Gibbs went missing Sunday sometime between 1 and 6 p.m. while he was boating on Chautauqua Lake.  Since then, searchers had been out on the water looking for Gibbs, but up until Wednesday morning, they were only been able to find his boat, which was anchored a quarter mile off the Lakewood shore.

Sheriff Gerace said that Gibb’s death had been ruled an accidental drowning.

Meanwhile, rescue crews are continuing their search for 56 year old Karen Christian of Cherry Creek, who was last seen leaving her 7891 Plank Road home one week ago today, on the morning of June 17.

Police are asking anyone with information in the Christian case to call the Sheriff’s office at 753-2131.
